PGCAC HBCU Tour
The Prince George’s County Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has sponsored annual tours of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) for the past 23 years. HBCU DAY TOUR FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS
The HBCU Day Tour was designed alignment with the philosophy of Walter Allen who clearly described the role of HBCUs as an opportunity to “preserve a culture, prosper a community, equip a new generation of leaders, and model what is best about America” in his summer 2007 publication in the Journal of Negro Education.
The HBCU DAY TOUR goals are
ü To stimulate an earlier and more focused interest in higher education by engaging 7th and 8th grade students with the flexibility to include 9th graders;
ü To inspire the middle school student to begin an earlier preparation to meet the rigor of the college admission requirements, while being focused on the uniqueness of the HBCUs;
ü To reverse the erroneously thought that enhanced academic achievement in the 12th grade would erase all prior records of mediocrity;
ü To instill the importance of powerful academic achievement in grades 9, 10, and 11 so that students will become more competitive for scholarships; and
ü To expose students to the unique nurturing environments and career options afforded by HBCUs such as the one of a kind equestrian and aviation programs offered at Delaware State University along with the strong mentoring support offered by the Student Ambassador Program at Coppin State University.
This one day tour will be held on Friday, October 15, 2010
Students will tour Norfolk State University (Norfolk, VA) and Virginia State University (Petersburg, VA)
