Child reading a book

PGCAC Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)

The long-standing School America initiative continues to be an effective National family reading program with a rather practical approach for success.  Readers pledge to read just one story weekly to a child between the ages of one to ten.

Now identified as Literacy - School America, the Prince George's County Alumnae Chapter (PGCAC) maintains a committee to implement developmentally appropriate tutorial and/or reading programs in settings ranging from pre-schools to retirement centers in an effort to eradicate illiteracy.

Additionally, complimentary books are provided to children in local schools through the Reading is Fundamental (RIF) Program, the nation’s oldest and largest non-profit children’s literacy organization.  Members of PGCAC embrace the objectives of RIF and strive to build a literate nation by motivating children to read, developing approaches to increase family and community involvement in this movement, and increasing the excitement enjoyed by children when selecting complimentary books.

Most recently, the PGCAC School American committee participated in the “READING IS PRESIDENTIAL” inaugural book drive spearheaded by RIF.  While the goal of collecting 44,000 books for schools in the District of Columbia in honor of the historic election of the nation’s 44th president was a noble one, it remains a work in progress.
