PGCAC Scholarship Recipients 2009
As of December 31, 2007, the Chapter has awarded over $450,000 and $40,000 annually in scholarships to over 250 area high school students and continuing scholars. Our scholarship recipients exemplify some of the highest academic achievements, demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and potential; and participate in community service activities. They represent some of the best and the brightest young adults in Prince George's County.
The Scholarship Program is funded through two (2) separate Foundation related projects: the Annual Fashion Show/Scholarship Luncheon and the Jabberwock Cotillion. The Annual Fashion Show continues to be the greatest source of scholarship funding for the Scholarship Program. Supported by corporate sponsors and a generous public, attendance at our Annual Fashion Show/Scholarship Luncheon benefit has grown from 300 to more than 1200 Sorors and guests.
SAT SKILLS WORKSHOP
The SAT Workshop was implemented to address the large number of minority students in our community receiving low scores on the SAT and the small numbers of students taking the SAT in preparation for college. The SAT Workshop provides students with:
- An overview of the SAT test
- Examples of questions on the test and provides pointers
- Strategies and techniques to prompt higher performance and scores
Parents are also encouraged to attend as often questions and answer sessions serve as vehicles to discuss preparing for the future. Professional experts and resources are utilized to facilitate the workshop.
IMAGE BUILDING WORKSHOP
This workshop strives to increase youth awareness of the achievements and contributions of African-Americans. It strives to motivate, educate and build upon the youth's self-esteem. Through a forum, hosted by local and national celebrities and role models, the following topics may be discussed: "Youth Adolescent and Health Issues: Obesity", "Financial Workshops", "Career Planning/Choices", "Building Character: Spiritually and Physically", "Interviewing Techniques/Resume Writing," "Technical versus Non Technical Careers", Youth Leadership and other youth considerations/concerns.
