Social Action Committee Creating Change

PGCAC Social Action

The Social Action committee promotes community awareness and education on current social and political issues that support the sorority's national five-point programmatic thrust.  The committee advocates effective leadership and self-empowerment to effect social change and public policy.

The goals of Social Action are:
Let Your Voice Be Heard!

  • To develop an appreciation of the potential for influence in the community by African-Americans, especially women;
  • To increase knowledge of current local and national issues, so that the community will be informed and effective citizens and advocates;
  • To encourage political awareness and participation;
  • To influence the enactment of legislation, national and locally, of particular interest to African Americans and women;
  • To maintain vigilance over action or inaction by local judicial and administrative agencies and officials;
  • To volunteer as leaders in civic and social action organizations; and
  • To encourage increased appointments of African American women in policy-making positions in government, nationally and locally.

In order to accomplish these goals, the Social Action Committee engages in the following activities:

  • Coordinates the chapter's participation and involvement in:
    • Delta Days in the Nations Capital (February);
    • Delta Day in Annapolis (March - In recent years this activity has been co-sponsored with Kappa Alpha Psi); and
    • Maryland President's Council Political Awareness Workshop (October).
  • Participates in and co-sponsors the annual and local Women's Legislative Briefing.
  • Supports the Maryland Legislative Agenda for Women.
  • Coordinates efforts with the local NAACP chapter by promoting membership drives; sponsoring and attending the Annual Freedom Fund Banquet (November); and during election years, participating in voter registration campaigns and "Meet the Candidates" forums.
  • Participates in community service projects such as:
    • Race for Education to support the Excellence in Education Foundation for Prince George's County Public Schools (April);
    • Adopt-a-Road Project; and
    • Youth Empowerment Council through the State's Attorney Office.
  • Conducts workshops and forums addressing current social and political issues.
  • Encourages the community to be active participants in the election process and to be informed consumers of the political issues.
