Educational Development
Annually, the Prince George's County Alumnae Chapter provides more than $30,000 in scholarships to local high school and undergraduate college-enrolled student residents in an effort to promote the advancement of higher education. Additionally, complimentary SAT/PSAT workshops are held along with image-building seminars, college fairs, and tours of historically Black colleges and universities for middle and high school students.
Opportunities to support the scholarship program include the annual Fashion Show and Luncheon Benefit and biennial Jabberwock Cotillion, where tax-deductible donations can be made to the Prince George's County Delta Alumnae Foundation.
Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy
The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy is a unique program designed for young ladies ages 11-14 years. The goals of the Academy are to enhance or spark interest in math, science, technology and/or careers where minority women are scarcely represented. The Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy's aim is to shape well rounded young women by focusing on African American history, literacy, character development, healthy choices and service learning.
Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute
The Dr. Jeanne L. Noble Delta GEMS Institute community service develops strong, confident, and respectful young ladies. This mentoring program strives to prepare young ladies to take active roles in their success and in society at-large. This program received the National Exemplary Program Honor for Delta GEMS at the 48th National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and continues to serves as a strategy to inspire African-American teenage girls in Prince George's County, Maryland.
EMBODI
Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence (EMBODI) is the signature program of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.’s 24th National President, Cynthia M.A. Butler-McIntyre. EMBODI is designed to refocus Delta’s efforts to collaborate with other established organizations and agencies to address the plight of African American males. The EMBODI program provides a continuum of services and addresses the specific needs of African-American males.
HBCU Tour
This annual tour introduces high school students to the nurturing college campus life only afforded by HBCUs and provides first-hand opportunities for discussions with college admissions staff regarding curriculum information, entrance requirements, financial aid resources, and more.
Jabberwock
Conceptualized in 1925 as a musical variety show that consisted of skits and dances, the Jabberwock has since evolved into a more diverse program that continues to raise funds for scholarships and other Delta sponsored public service projects. The word Jabberwock, copyrighted by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has evolved in its symbolism over the past eighty years. It now represents an evening of elegance and entertainment that showcases the gifts and talents of the young women participating in the program while advancing the goals and objectives of Delta's scholarship program.
Reading Is Fundamental (RIF)
The RIF Program continues to embrace children in the Prince George’s community, implanting the importance and immeasurable value of learning gained from simply reading books.
SEE Program
The Science and Everyday Experiences (SEE) Initiative is designed to provide intense focus on mathematics, science, and technology support to African American students in grades K-8.
Scholarship & Standards
The Scholarships and Standards Program was created as a educational strategy to provide comprehensive preparation for students with higher education aspirations. Beyond scholarships, this program provides image-building seminars, test taking skills, and tours to Black colleges and univerisity for middle and high school and college-bound students who reside in Prince George's County, Maryland.
TORCH
The TORCH (Taking Ownership and Responsibility for Childhood Health) Program is a means to ensure that prevention and reversal begins with collective ownership and responsibility for childhood health as fostered by education, demonstration, and collaboration with community partners. TORCH will serve as a platform to engage youth in physical activity while providing resources to improve and maintain children's health in Prince George’s County.
